Secondary Mastery conference. |
|
The Central and North Mids Maths Hubs have come together to put on this Secondary Mastery conference for all teachers in the Central and North Mids Hub regions. It aims to share a number of interesting ideas that teachers can use in their practice as well as provide an enjoyable, hands-on day. The conference will feature keynote talks by Rob Eastaway and Tom Manners plus a number of workshops for you to choose from, led by our Secondary Mastery Specialists.
Outline of the day
KEYNOTE 1
The journey from EYFS to KS4 and why you need to know it! When students join us in Year 7, they have already been in maths lessons for seven years. As practitioners, we need to know about their previous experience and expectations so we can build upon it and create a coherent journey through school for our young people. But then there is also the journey that we create for them from years 7 to 11 - how can we ensure its coherence too? KEYNOTE 2 You too can be a maths genius. When Bobby Seagull calculated 45 x 400 in his head on TV, comedian Tom Allen described him as a 'genius'. If that's what it takes to be a genius, then most of your students can be geniuses too. Rob will demonstrate some impressive mental arithmetic feats and then explains the mathematical principles behind them. You will discover some intriguing applications of algebra and simple number theory, while learning ways to impress your students and give them a vital life skill at the same time. |

Workshops - 1 1A My favourite problems to show students - James Bloxidge, Secondary Mastery Specialist, Central This workshop will involve sharing and demonstrating maths problems that have been used with students and which promote an extra level of mathematical thinking. Some group tasks, some functional tasks and some tricky tasks, even up to KS5. 1B Planning a rigorous curriculum - Amie Meek, Assistant Maths Hub Lead, North Mids Do your curriculum plans support teachers with delivering content well? Would a non-specialist know what to do? This session will explore how can we best support teachers to plan and deliver a rigorous curriculum. 1C Developing fluency with multiplicative reasoning - Larua Butlin, Secondary Mastery Specialist, Central In this session we will look at examples of some activities created for the Developing Fluency with Multiplicative Reasoning at KS3 Work Groups. Experiences of how they have worked with pupils will be shared and we will work together to see how they could work with yours. 1D GCSE to A-Level: The key topics that make or break a year 12 mathematician - Aaron Mitchell, Secondary Mastery Specialist Here we will look at some of those key topics that seem like poor economic profit at GCSE but have the biggest impact on success at A-level. We will look at methods of teaching them for depth of understanding and also where they appear in the A-Level curriculum. |
Workshops - 2 2A - (LIMITED REACHED) Thinking mathematically - Andy Burton, Assistant Maths Hub Lead, Central What does promoting mathematical thinking in a classroom look like? In this session we will work on different task types and strategies that might be used to give opportunities for mathematical thinking and problem solving in daily maths lessons 2B - (LIMITED REACHED) SEND in mainstream classroom - Rebecca Ibbs, Assistant Maths Hub Lead, North Mids During this session we will look at different barriers for students to learning maths and strategies that can be put in place to support this 2C Year 7 makes or breaks the mathematician! - Leanne Bell-Bayliss, Secondary Mastery Specialist, Central This workshop will look at some cross-phase case studies which have been generated by participants at the Y5-8 continuity work group this year in order to pull out key issues in transition. On the back of these case studies we may explore specific mathematical approaches as well as structural/partnership working strategies to ease some of the symptoms. 2D The Power of 10 - Structuring lessons to minimise cognitive load - Christopher Barnett, Further Education Maths Specialist Ever finished a lesson feeling like you’ve covered everything, only for your learners to look at you like you’ve just spoken in ancient Greek? In this session, we’ll explore how structuring lessons around 10 carefully sequenced questions can cut through the noise, reduce cognitive load, and help learners actually retain what they’ve learned. |
