Come and join a Work Group that will look at ways of improving outcomes for girls in maths and STEM. Try out new ideas in your classroom and share with colleagues.

Who can take part?
This Work Group is for classroom teachers and mathematics leaders.

What does it involve?
This is a ‘research and innovation’ Work Group enabling participants to develop an aspect of Teaching for Mastery in their own schools. We will work together to explore approaches that improve outcomes for girls in maths and STEM.

Central workshops will focus on:

Developing knowledge of issues that impact on girls self-belief;
Considering how to develop skills needed for both current and later mathematics;
Exploring three key areas: collaborative problem solving, oracy and spatial awareness;
Collaboratively planning lessons.

School-based work:

teach a series of lessons aimed at improving outcomes for girls;
reading – short pieces related to project;
brief pupil case studies (three per participant/school);
teach a series of lessons incorporating chosen focus;
prepare brief presentations to share with colleagues and celebrate progress.

What is the time commitment?

Three whole day workshops;
Plan change, try something new and reflect;
Reflect on practice and share with colleagues.

Participants and their schools will:

Improve understanding of issues that impact on girls’ attitude to mathematics;
Engage in research evidence including the findings of colleagues;
Collaborate with others to explore the issues impacting girls;
Develop subject knowledge to facilitate a coherent curriculum in mixed-age classes;
Increase all pupil engagement in mathematics lessons;
Have the opportunity to contribute evidence that can be used more widely to support the understanding of the issues that impact on girls’ learning.

The Work Group is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and so is provided FREE to participating schools.
Expectations of Participants and their Schools - Schools must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme, with senior leadership releasing the same nominated teacher(s) to attend ALL workshops, as well as school-based activity.

What is the specific focus?

09/01/24 9.30am-3.30 pm	Workshop 1 Challoner House (B14 7EG)	Discuss each of the three focus areas for the project: oracy, collaborative problem solving, spatial awareness Consider pedagogic approaches that benefit girls whilst not disadvantaging boys Collaboratively plan your research project in your chosen area Explore an example project that could be done in school.
Ongoing	Reading and self-study	Read resources that support your chosen area Teach the collaboratively planned lessons. Gather evidence, complete pupil case-study proforma for feedback in session 2
28/2/24 10:30am-3.30 pm	Workshop 2 Online	Discussion of reading – do you agree/disagree with what you’ve read? Feedback on the series of lessons taught. Work collaboratively to draft findings that could be shared more widely or used by others in your school. Select a second area of focus (one explored by Work Group colleagues) to explore in school.
Ongoing	School-based work	Continue to collaborate with your Work Group colleagues sharing ideas and practice Teach a series of lessons on your chosen focus and evaluate the impact on learning (allowing for the novelty factor depending on your usual approach) Gather evidence, complete pupil case-study proforma Prepare a short presentation to share with colleagues
17/6/24 9.30am-3.30 pm	Workshop 3 Challoner House (B14 7EG)	Review lessons taught, and share experiences Feedback on evidence gathered, pupil case-studies Consider if the approach used for your chosen areas could be adapted more widely Work collaboratively to produce a presentation that could be shared locally and nationally to add to the ‘conversation’ regarding girls and STEM.
