Digital Technology for Mastery
RIWG (Rsearch & Innovation Work Group) Introduction
“Arguments about the value of mathematics are well-made and widely accepted. It is now time to ensure that the digital tools that are now commonplace, both for doing mathematics and for applying mathematical and data ideas in a range of education, work, and life contexts, are widely and equitably adopted to enhance mathematical attainment and outcomes for all” - JMC Working Group Report – Mathematics Education and Digital Technology – July 2023. This commissioned theme is inspired by the recent JMC work on the uses of digital technologies in mathematics. Here, we are interested in how the use of digital technologies by either teachers or pupils (or both) supports pupils to gain a deeper understanding of the mathematics they are studying. We are looking for participants to take part in this cross-phase Research and Innovation Work Group to focus on the used on online manipulatives by using Mathigon’s Polypad. As participant teachers in this RIWGs you will collaborate the RIWG Lead with other teachers to try a new approach to teaching and learning mathematics with your pupils, and to share your findings professionally. The aim of this work to be answer the questions, “How does the use of online manipulatives to greater pupil conceptual understanding” What is involved? The RIWG will consist of five online twilight sessions which will each focus on an area of mathematics and explore the teaching possibilities that Polypad offers. The RIWG Lead will be there to share their expertise on using the technology and offer possible uses in the classroom. The participating teachers will consider the possibilities that the technology has to offer to support their teaching and the pupils in their own setting. They will also be asked to discuss and share these with other participants and feedback on their experiences of using Polypad. Who can take part? This RIWG is open any teacher, both primary and secondary, who has any interest in using digital technology within the classroom and has some experience with the ideas of Teaching for Mastery. Ideally this would be Mastery Advocates of key stage 2 or 3 teaching but the invite extends to teachers of the other key stages with knowledge of mathematical representations and/or experience of using manipulatives. Teachers would get more from the experience of this Work Group if their students have access to the use of technology in the classroom but teachers using technology as part of their delivery and/or utilising it for homework would also benefit. All sessions will be delivered online. You will be sent an email with the link before the session date. Session 1 - Introduction to Polypad & Number Tuesday 5th December 2023 (1:30pm – 4pm) Session 2 - Fractions, Percentages & Decimals Tuesday 9th January 2024 (3:30pm - 5pm) Session 3 - Algebra & Graphs Tuesday 6th February 2024 (3:30pm – 5pm) Session 4 - Shape & Geometry Tuesday 12th March 2024 (3:30pm – 5pm) Session 5 - Data & Showcase Tuesday 9th April 2024 (3:30pm – 5pm) |
