Secondary TfM Embedding and Sustaining Work Groups

This year it will comprise of 3 Option choices

There will be an online event for any of the chosen options below on:
Thursday 16 November 2023 at 3.30-5.00pm (only for option 1 and 3)
Option 2 online event will be held on Thursday 7 December2023.

Please note: there is a maximum number of places at each session. We will try to accommodate your first choice in the first instance.

OPTION 1 - Mathematical Thinking
There will be three online sessions in Option 1 and will run from 3:30pm-5:00pm. There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment. Date now confirmed - Friday 23rd February 2024.

Declarative and procedural knowledge is often taught well in Secondary maths classrooms. In comparison practitioners generally have less confidence in teaching conditional knowledge: strategies formed from the combinations of facts and methods to reason and problem-solve is taught. The recent Ofsted Maths review - Coordinating Mathematical Success (July 2023) states,

"Secondary schools should make sure that the curriculum plans how pupils will learn conditional (problem-solving) knowledge over time, for example by: ensuring that all pupils have enough opportunities to practise solving problems, after they have first being taught, and that these opportunities require pupils to make decisions about how best to solve these unfamiliar problems."

These sessions will explore how mathematical thinking can be used in maths lessons to develop reasoning and problem-solving strategies with students. Participants will be encouraged to trial some of these ideas with students in their own setting with opportunities to review successful (and unsuccessful) approaches with other mastery advocates within the group. One aim will be to create a toolkit of ideas/resources to be used as PD materials within individual schools to increase the effective use of mathematical thinking within the maths classroom.

OPTION 2 - Revisiting Teaching for Mastery Development
There will be three online sessions in Option 2 and run from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment. Date now confirmed - Friday 23rd February 2024.

These three sessions will be designed for staff who have recently joined a department that have had previous training on the NCETM’s five big ideas of Teaching for Mastery but have not been individually trained themselves.

Within each online session, we will look at the research behind each of the five big ideas and explore practical usages of each one. Gap tasks will be given to encourage the use of each idea in attendees’ lessons to ensure immediate implementation.

The ideas to be explored will be variation, representation and structure, coherence, mathematical thinking and fluency.

OPTION 3 - Using Variation
There will be three online sessions in Option 3 and run from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment. Date now confirmed - Friday 23rd February 2024.

These three sessions will be an in depth look at conceptual and procedural variation. We will look at how a careful use of examples and a range of question types can help with pupil understanding. We will look at techniques and strategies that are easy to implement within the classroom and ensure your students develop a deep understanding.

During the development year, you will have learnt about the importance of both types of variation and some of the research behind it. However, if we can use variation correctly we can see great success for our pupils and so these sessions will give you a more in depth look. During these sessions we will more carefully consider different types of examples and different types of examples. We will create our own sets of variated questions and look at how we can support members of our departments creating and using their own and we will also look at the best ways to present examples to our classes.

The first session for all 3 Options will be online on Thursday 16 November at 3.30-5.00pm . Once you have chosen your Option, we will then be in touch nearer the date with your link.
