Secondary TfM Embedding and Sustaining Work Groups

Please note: there is a maximum number of places at each session. We will try to accommodate your first choice in the first instance.

OPTION 1 - Lesson planning using the principles of mastery
There will be three online sessions in Option 1 and will run from 3:30pm-5:00pm. There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment.

These three sessions will focus on implementing the ideas for Teaching for Mastery into lessons. We explore how variation, fluency, representation & structure, mathematical thinking and coherence might look within a typical maths lesson.

We will look at techniques and strategies that are easy to implement within the classroom and ensure your students are thinking mathematically.

The online sessions will include:
1) Lesson planning for angles – focusing on variation and mathematical thinking
2) Lesson planning for algebra – focusing on representations and coherence
3) Lesson planning for number – focusing on fluency and variation

Gap tasks will be given to encourage the use of tasks and resources within classrooms and we will discuss the impact of these in subsequent sessions.

OPTION 2 - Revisiting Teaching for Mastery Development
There will be three online sessions in Option 2 and run from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment.

These three sessions will be designed for staff who have recently joined a department that have had previous training on the NCETM’s five big ideas of Teaching for Mastery but have not been individually trained themselves.

Within each online session, we will look at the research behind each of the five big ideas and explore practical usages of each one. Gap tasks will be given to encourage the use of each idea in attendees’ lessons to ensure immediate implementation.

The ideas to be explored will be variation, representation and structure, coherence, mathematical thinking and fluency.

OPTION 3 - Use of Manipulatives
There will be three online sessions in Option 3 and run from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment.

There is strong evidence from the NCETM and the EEF (guidance report "Improving mathematics in Key Stages 2 and 3) that the use of manipulatives in mathematics help students to engage with mathematical ideas. However, they are just tools and it's how they are used in the classroom which will be the decisive factor on their overall effectiveness.

This group will focus on the use of just one manipulative - The Double-Sided Counter - across a range of topics. The sessions will explore how these can be used within Key Stage 3 lessons to maximise the impact. Participants will be encouraged to trial some of these ideas with students in their own setting with opportunities to review successful (and unsuccessful) approaches with other mastery advocates within the group. One aim will be to create a toolkit of ideas/resources to be used as PD materials within individual schools to increase the effective use of manipulatives within the maths classroom.

Each participant will be issued with a complimentary set of Double-Sided Counters to help facilitate these approaches with students.
