SKTM: Secondary Teaching Assistants

This Work Group is designed for Secondary Teaching Assistants /Learning Support Assistants who would like to develop their maths subject knowledge to enable them to better support their students.

What is involved?

A fantastic opportunity for Secondary Teaching Assistants who are supporting students in KS3 or KS4 Maths, to build their subject knowledge and confidence. This Work Group will look at content, resources and methods to support the students and will culminate in looking at how the information learnt could be effectively shared with other TAs in the participants’ schools.

The Work Group also aims to support schools working on addressing specific challenges in Secondary mathematics teaching, through the use of Teaching for Mastery approaches in order to support students with Special Educational Needs.

As with all Work Groups, participants will conduct activities back in school and share with this collaborate learning group.

What will you learn?

  • You will review your practice as a result of the sessions and make specific adaptations to support the students you are working with
  • You will enhance your understanding of key mathematical structures and representations in the following areas:  Addition and subtraction (extending to negative numbers), Multiplication and division (extending to negative numbers), Fractions, Ratio and proportion.
  • Your students will demonstrate a positive attitude towards maths, being willing to have a go, persevere, and share their mathematical ideas
