Teaching for Mastery
These Work Groups are for schools that have previously participated in a Primary Teaching for Mastery project. Participating schools will continue to work alongside other schools to embed and refine teaching for mastery approaches in their school to benefit all pupils.
What is Involved?
These Work Groups have a clear focus on sustained practice within school and are centred around key core leadership sessions with opportunities to attend collaborative school visits.
The Work Groups are aimed at Headteachers and Maths Leads within schools.
Additional Pathway opportunities are open to those schools actively engaging within a Teaching for Mastery Work Group. These pathways are available to all teachers and will focus on particular themes of teachng for mastery. For 2025/2026 academic year the pathways ran were;
- Oracy in Mathematics
- Mathematical Jounaling
- SEND in mainstream
- Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 refresh
- Mastering Number at KS2 refresh
- Mastering Number in Year 3
- Collaborative Planning at KS1
- Collaborative Planning at KS2
- New Maths Leads
- New teachers to Teaching for Mastery
- Teaching Maths in a Special Needs setting

What will you learn?
You and your school will:
- Enhance your mathematical subject knowledge, emphasising key areas of maths
- Plan, teach and reflect on lessons with a mastery approach
- Understand the school-wide structures which enable staff to develop mastery approaches
- Along with your school leaders, will establish systems to support ongoing professional learning within school
