Teaching for Mastery Introductory

What is involved?

Each participating school selects two teachers to join a local Work Group, led by an experienced Primary Mastery Specialist. Together with teachers from other local schools, they will:

  • Meet regularly to plan, observe, and reflect on mastery teaching practices
  • Explore and trial approaches in their own classrooms between sessions
  • Receive ongoing support and classroom visits from their Mastery Specialist

This is a hands-on, evidence-informed programme built on professional collaboration and designed to foster long-lasting change in maths teaching.

Who can take part?

This programme is open to state-funded primary schools in England. Each school commits to:

  • Sending two teachers to half-termly, school-based research groups
  • Welcoming a termly visit from their Mastery Specialist

Teachers working in special schools or units will also join a dedicated Community Network to share insights and collaborate with others in similar settings.

Please note: Schools can only take part in this introductory phase once, but other Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are available in subsequent years. Get in touch to explore the options.

What will you learn?

Teachers and school leaders will:

  • Evaluate and refine their school’s systems, culture, and professional development
  • Understand how to apply the Five Catalysts of Change as well as implement the Five Big Ideas in everyday practice
  • Strengthen their maths subject knowledge with a focus on progression and depth

Pupils will:

  • Show improved learning outcomes, backed by school data and teacher reflections
  • Develop greater confidence and enjoyment in maths
