Our Teaching for Mastery Introductory Work Group provides an opportunity for schools to explore the key principles of mastery, develop their understanding and consider how these approaches can support all learners.

We are particularly keen to encourage special schools, alternative provision and resource bases to get involved, with plans to offer a Work Group specifically for specialist settings.

This Work Group will be tailored to the needs of participating schools, ensuring that the professional learning is relevant, meaningful and responsive to the diverse needs of pupils within specialist provision.

Through collaborative professional development, participants will have opportunities to share experiences, explore practical approaches and consider how Teaching for Mastery can be developed within their own setting.

Developing confident leadership and inclusive approaches to mathematics across your setting.

Our Teaching for Mastery Leadership Work Group brings together school leaders and maths leads to explore how mastery approaches can support high-quality, inclusive mathematics teaching and learning.

We particularly welcome leaders from special schools, alternative provision and resource bases, providing opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, share experiences and consider how Teaching for Mastery can be developed and embedded within specialist settings.

The Work Group for the 2026/2027 academic year is being led by Tania Timmins, Primary Maths Specialist and Deputy Headteacher at Pens Meadow School, bringing valuable experience of both mathematics leadership and teaching within specialist provision.

What is involved?

Through collaborative professional development, participants will have opportunities to:

• Explore the principles of Teaching for Mastery and how they can be adapted to meet the diverse needs of learners.

• Reflect on their school's mathematics curriculum, teaching approaches and priorities for development.

• Share practice and challenges with other leaders working in specialist and inclusive settings.

• Develop approaches to leading and sustaining improvements in mathematics teaching across their setting.

• Access further professional development opportunities through our Teacher Pathways, including those focused on SEND and specialist provision.

Our Teacher Pathways provide focused professional learning to help teachers explore inclusive approaches to mathematics, adaptive teaching and curriculum development.

Opportunities include SEND in Mainstream and Teachers in Special Schools, supporting practitioners to develop approaches that respond to the diverse needs of their learners.

Secondary Mathematics Work Groups

Our secondary programmes support teachers in developing mathematical understanding, reasoning and fluency, with a focus on securing strong foundations for all learners.

Opportunities include Securing Foundations at Key Stage 3 and Developing Fluency in Multiplicative Reasoning, providing practical strategies, high-quality resources and opportunities to collaborate with colleagues.

Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM)

Our SKTM programmes are designed to strengthen mathematical subject knowledge and confidence in teaching and supporting mathematics.

We offer opportunities for non-specialist teachers and teaching assistants across primary and secondary settings, helping participants deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts, representations and effective approaches to supporting learners.

Our new Research & Innovation Work Group (RIWG) has been developed in response to demand from schools looking to deepen their approaches to SEND and mathematics.

Designed particularly for schools that participated in last year's SEND in Mainstream Teacher Pathway, this Work Group focuses on supporting pupils working significantly below age-related expectations, including those with complex learning needs who require substantial curriculum adaptations.

Bringing together Maths Leads and SENDCos, the programme provides an opportunity to combine expertise, explore research-informed approaches and develop inclusive mathematics provision that is both ambitious and responsive to learners' needs.

What will you explore?

• Inclusive curriculum design – Developing flexible, high-expectation mathematics curricula that maintain mathematical integrity.

• Adaptive teaching – Strengthening approaches to support access, participation and independence for pupils with complex needs.

• Mathematical subject knowledge – Deepening understanding of mathematical development, including learning that precedes National Curriculum content.

• Evaluating impact – Reflecting on classroom practice and developing sustainable approaches to whole-school improvement.

What is involved?

Participants will engage in three full-day collaborative professional learning sessions, alongside a bespoke, school-specific online coaching clinic to explore challenges, identify learning gaps and develop targeted approaches.

Working with colleagues from other schools, participants will share experiences, reflect on practice and consider how learning can be embedded within their own setting.

Who should join?

This Work Group is particularly suited to Maths Leads and SENDCos working together in mainstream schools supporting pupils with significant and complex needs, including those accessing learning within inclusion units or resource bases.

Schools should have fully engaged in the previous SEND in Mainstream Pathway, as this programme builds on that foundation.
