Our Secondary Maths Subject Leaders Community is specifically designed for Maths Curriculum Leads and Heads of Department across Birmingham, Dudley and Sandwell.

Open to both new and experienced leaders, the community provides dedicated opportunities to develop your leadership, connect with colleagues and explore the latest thinking in mathematics education.

Participants will work collaboratively with other subject leaders, discuss current developments, engage with research and consider how learning can be used to develop mathematics teaching and strengthen departmental practice within their own schools.

What is involved?

The 2026/27 programme brings subject leaders together through two face-to-face Maths Leaders Conferences, supported by an online professional learning workshop between the two events.

Across the year, participants will:

• explore current priorities and developments in mathematics education
• engage with research and evidence-informed practice
• discuss common challenges facing maths departments
• share approaches and learn from other subject leaders
• consider practical ways to develop teaching, curriculum and departmental practice
• build connections with a wider network of maths leaders across Birmingham, Dudley and Sandwell

The programme is designed as a connected professional learning journey, giving leaders opportunities to explore ideas, apply them in school and return to the community to reflect and build on their learning.

Our first Maths Leaders Conference takes place on 20 October at Millenium Point, Birmingham. The conference will provide opportunity to explore approaches to developing mathematical thinking and problem solving, with a focus on ensuring all learners can engage, reason and succeed in mathematics. It will include sessions from Pearson - GCSE Maths 2026 Exam Insights and Richard Perring - Problem Solving for All Learners.
