Post 16: Developing Core Maths Pedagogy

APPLY FOR 2026/27

This Work Group is for institutions in which Core Maths is established, and will involve teachers of Core Maths who are in at least their second year of teaching the qualification, who are looking to deepen their pedagogical understanding of contextualised problem solving.

These may be teachers in post-16 settings whose main subject is maths or whose main subject is not maths. Participants will be expected, where appropriate, to work with colleagues in their own department.

What is involved?

These Work Groups give teachers opportunities, through collaboration and experimentation, to develop improved teaching approaches that support the open-ended problem-solving skills students need and to share these with departmental colleagues. Participants will design and trial classroom activities, sharing and reflecting on their experiences with others in the Work Group.

Participants will engage with the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), who are working in partnership to deliver this opportunity.

Who can take part?

Teachers of Core Maths in post-16 settings are welcome, whether their main subject is maths or another subject, provided they are in at least their second year of teaching the Core Maths qualification. Where appropriate, participants will be expected to work with colleagues in their own department to share their learning.
