Post 16: Developing Core Maths Pedagogy
This Work Group is for teachers in institutions where Core Maths is already established. It is aimed at teachers who are in at least their second year of teaching the qualification and who want to deepen their understanding of effective approaches to contextualised and open-ended problem solving.
Participants may work in post-16 settings and may be mathematics specialists or teachers whose main subject is not mathematics.
What is involved?
Through collaboration, discussion and classroom experimentation, participants will explore approaches that develop the problem-solving skills students need to succeed in Core Maths.
Teachers will design and trial classroom activities, reflect on their impact, and share their experiences with others in the Work Group. Where appropriate, participants will also share their learning with colleagues within their own department to support wider improvements in teaching.
This Work Group is delivered through a partnership between the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP).
Who can take part?
This Work Group is suitable for teachers who:
- teach Core Maths in a post-16 setting;
- are in at least their second year of teaching the Core Maths qualification;
- want to develop their teaching of contextualised and open-ended problem solving; and
- are willing to collaborate with other teachers and, where appropriate, share their learning with colleagues in their own department.
Teachers are welcome whether mathematics is their main subject or they teach Core Maths alongside another subject specialism.
