Strengthen the transition from primary to secondary maths and create greater curriculum continuity across Years 5–8.

This free Work Group brings primary and secondary teachers together to explore how mathematics can be taught more consistently across KS2 and KS3. It is ideal for feeder schools, families of schools and MATs that want to strengthen transition and develop a shared approach to curriculum and pedagogy.

Participants should teach within Years 5–8 and ideally have some responsibility for curriculum development.

Why sign up?

Transition from primary to secondary school can create unnecessary breaks in pupils’ mathematical learning. This Work Group gives teachers the opportunity to work across phases to better understand what pupils have experienced before transition and how their learning can be built upon at KS3.

By taking part, you will:

• develop greater consistency in language, representations and teaching approaches across KS2 and KS3;
• deepen your understanding of the curriculum and expectations across Years 5–8;
• strengthen collaboration between primary and secondary colleagues;
• explore high-quality Checkpoints, Multiplicative Reasoning and Algebraic Thinking resources;
• use lesson study and, where possible, cross-phase classroom observation to explore and improve practice; and
• help create a smoother transition that supports pupils to approach secondary mathematics with confidence and a positive attitude.

Who should take part?

The Work Group is open to both primary and secondary schools and is particularly powerful when schools participate together.

Consider joining as a secondary school with feeder primaries, a group of local schools, or schools within the same MAT to develop a shared and sustainable approach to mathematics across Years 5–8.
