EY: Mastering Number at Reception & KS1

The Mastering Number Programme is supporting pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to develop solid number sense, including fluency and flexibility with number facts, which will have a lasting impact on future learning for all children. The programme also involves high quality professional development for teachers. The programme content has been expanded for 2026-27 to include support for Spatial Reasoning in KS1 and a full maths curriculum for Reception.
What are the benefits of the mastering number programme?
Through participation in the programme, pupils will develop confidence in clearly communicating their mathematical thinking and reasoning. Teachers will strengthen their understanding of how to build secure mathematical foundations, while developing teaching approaches that support fluency in calculation and strong number sense for all children. The programme will also deepen teachers’ understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support the teaching of mathematical structures.
Schools that have not previously participated will receive a free allocation of Rekenreks from the DfE, with the quantity provided based on the size of the school. The programme is fully funded and therefore free of charge for participating schools.
Who can take part?
The school must be a state-funded primary or infant school within England
Participants will consist of three teachers - one each from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. They will take on the role of Lead Teachers. Additional support and guidance will also be available for Maths Leaders and Headteachers.
Lead Teachers will be encouraged to share learning and support colleagues within their year group teams.
Schools already participating in a Teaching for Mastery programme should only apply if they have the capacity to fully engage with both programmes. Where capacity is limited, priority should be given to Teaching for Mastery participation.
Schools that have previously taken part in the programme are welcome to reapply; however, please note that applications will still be subject to the oversubscription selection process.
