Secondary TfM Embedding and Sustaining Work Groups

This year it will comprise of 3 Option choices

Please note: there is a maximum number of places at each session. We will try to accommodate your first choice in the first instance.

OPTION 1 - Mathematical Thinking
There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment.

Declarative and procedural knowledge is often taught well in Secondary maths classrooms. In comparison practitioners generally have less confidence in teaching conditional knowledge: strategies formed from the combinations of facts and methods to reason and problem-solve is taught. The recent Ofsted Maths review - Coordinating Mathematical Success (July 2023) states,

"Secondary schools should make sure that the curriculum plans how pupils will learn conditional (problem-solving) knowledge over time, for example by: ensuring that all pupils have enough opportunities to practise solving problems, after they have first being taught, and that these opportunities require pupils to make decisions about how best to solve these unfamiliar problems."

These sessions will explore how mathematical thinking can be used in maths lessons to develop reasoning and problem-solving strategies with students. Participants will be encouraged to trial some of these ideas with students in their own setting with opportunities to review successful (and unsuccessful) approaches with other mastery advocates within the group. One aim will be to create a toolkit of ideas/resources to be used as PD materials within individual schools to increase the effective use of mathematical thinking within the maths classroom.

OPTION 2 - Mastery Development and the Big Ideas
There will also be the opportunity to observe Teaching for Mastery in a primary school environment.

This work group will run a little differently to the others available, and is open to any staff in your department, whether it be HoDs, ECTs, experienced staff or non-specialists.
There will be a whole day’s training on Teaching for Mastery (TfM), covering an introduction to the 5 big ideas. Attendees will leave with practical strategies that can be immediately used in the classroom alongside sound knowledge of TfM. Approximately a month later, all attendees will then join the work group leader for a 1-1 coaching session(*) online for 30 min to discuss impact, to follow-up from the initial day’s training and to give the participant an opportunity to ask further questions to support their development.
The work group will run twice over the course of the year – once in the Autumn term and once in Spring. Dates are to be confirmed.
(*) – the sessions will be 1-1 if numbers allow. If the uptake is high, these meetings may be with 1 or 2 other attendees.

OPTION 3 - Developing Fluency with multiplicative reasoning in Key Stage 3
The aim of this Work Group is that schools will continue to reflect upon and develop teaching for mastery approaches within their own school as part of the Maths Hub mastery community. Focus on multiplicative reasoning Multiplicative reasoning encompasses many topics at Key Stage 3 from ratio and proportion to similar shapes continuing into trigonometry in Key Stage 4. This Work Group helps teachers work with their pupils on strategies to look at different contexts and key representations of mathematics. Teachers and their departments will have access to classroom resources that are designed to help pupils make connections and recognise relationships. Key features of the programme include the area model and embedding a double number line and ratio table within their classroom practice.
